The River of Ing
We continue to anchor '-ing' in my English Teaching Universe: 'Grammaria'.
Remember that in Grammaria '-ing' is a river - not a form but a shapeshifting force that carries the Energy of Continuity.
In this ritual we revisit 'The River Ing' and we remember that
The River Ing has 3 Primal Powers: It can become a thing, a quality or a process.
In this ritual, the traveller reads the current, observes the river in movement and experiences '-Ing' as a 'process'.
'Process' becomes the protagonist.
The Third Encounter
Now the student traveller is no longer surprised by the river. He/she sees the river everywhere.
The traveller can put a hand in the water and read the current and if he is lucky, the river might reveal moving scenes around him.
Examples:
- We heard them laughing.
- She watched the kids playing.
- Knowing the answer, she smiled.
- Feeling tired, he went home.
Ongoingness
This primal power of the river as 'process' is really all about ongoingness (continuity). The river flows.
Two contexts
Perception Verbs - seeing action in progress
- I saw him running
- We heard them laughing
Clauses of time / cause - joining Currents
- Feeling tired, she left.
- Seeing the police, he ran.
Here, action flows into action. One action pours into another like tributaries joining a river.
The joining currents of time and cause clauses:
Verbos de percepción + objeto + -ing
(Grammar + Exercise)
→ En este contexto, la forma en -ing es un participio presente.
→ Describe una acción o un estado en curso que se percibe en ese mismo momento.
Este uso no anula la estructura con el verbo en forma base (‘stem’), que sigue siendo correcta.
-ING indica una acción en curso, mientras que el verbo base indica una acción completa.
- I saw him running → acción en curso (action caught unfolding)
- I saw him run → acción completa/general (whole event seen as complete)
We have focused on the ongoing, continuous action because we are exploring '-ing' endings.
